Our Favorite Green Smoothie

I love smoothies and think they are a great option as a healthy breakfast or snack on-the-go. This recipe is by far one of my favorites, and is Ella approved!!! The best part? It's a make ahead recipe. Take a few minutes when you have some down time, and prep a bunch of servings into freezer bags. If you're concerned about using regular plastic freezer bags, like we are, you can buy reusable freezer bags here. We have a bunch of baggies to get through, but once we finish the box, I hope to never buy plastic baggies again. We are really making an effort to be better to the environment. Anyway, back to the smoothie... I have tried making this recipe using ice + non frozen fruit, and I actually prefer the frozen prepped version much better. Go ahead and make it, you'll thank me later!

I am a big lover of this recipe, but I CANNOT take credit for it. I originally read this article on Buzzfeed and knew I had to try it. The original recipe originated from a cafe in NY. I think it's as good as the article makes it sound. You'll have to make it yourself and be the judge! :)

Required ingredients:
  • Handful of chopped kale
  • 1 tbsp nut butter of choice (we do almond butter)
  • 1/2 chopped banana
  • 1/2 chopped pear (skin on)
  • 1 cup vanilla soy milk [the original recipe calls for plain but we prefer vanilla]

Freeze the following in a freezer bag: Kale, nut butter, banana, and pear (we keep skin on)

To make, add the frozen contents to the blender, along with 1 cup of soy milk. Blend until completely smooth. We use a Blendtec blender and have been so happy with it. I have never owned a better blender, and love that it doesn't leave ANY chunks behind. It is noisy, but almost any good blender is going to be. We highly recommend it if you're in the market for a new one.

This smoothie is Mom approved...

And Ella approved.

It's so good!!! If you try it, let me know what you think. We are big fans.
